2004 Toyota Corolla Starter Motor Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the starter motor on 2004 Toyota Corolla?
A: Start the starter motor repair process by disconnecting terminal C lead wire and unscrewing two screws that fasten the starter drive housing kit before removing the whole package with return spring and plunger. Start by uninstalling the starter yoke assembly after removing the two through bolts and pulling out the yoke with its attached starter commutator end frame before splitting the yoke from this frame. To access the starter commutator end frame using a screwdriver one should remove the starter armature plate from the yoke. The correct tools needed for this step are snap ring pliers which remove the snap ring until the washer and starter armature are exposed from the end frame. Extract the planetary gears of the starter center bearing clutch and remove the clutch assembly together with its drive lever set pin from the housing before obtaining the set pin from the clutch. Check the starter kit through the repair service and test terminals 50 and C as well as terminal 50 and switch body for proper operation and continuity before replacing the kit. Continuity tests between the starter armature commutator segments and between commutator and coil core connection need to be performed during inspection. A replacement armature requires testing for surface quality and commutator depth. The end frame assembly of the starter commutator must be measured for brush length to determine if replacement is required and the positive and negative brush connection needs to be checked. Check the starter center bearing clutch for smooth operation and perform an assessment of its wear patterns or damage before changing it if required. Reinstall the starter drive lever set pin into the starter center bearing clutch before placing the clutch inside the housing. After applying grease to the planetary gears and pin parts put the three gears onto the clutch. Slip grease onto the armature shaft and washer prior to adding the starter components into the end frame while using a new snap ring to secure them before measuring its length correctly. Put the starter commutator end frame cover in place first before you set and position the starter armature plate together with the starter commutator end frame assembly inside the yoke. Completion of this procedure requires alignment of the starter yoke to the drive housing followed by torquing through bolts to 6.0 Nm and application of grease to the plunger and hook. After hanging the plunger hook to the set pin the plunger and return spring are installed and repair service starter kit screw fastening occurs at 7.5 Nm while terminal C lead wire connection needs a 10 Nm nut.
