2005 Toyota Corolla Starter Motor Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to overhaul the starter motor on 2005 Toyota Corolla?
A: Start by disconnecting the wire and removing two screws which attach the magnet switch body to the starter drive housing before extracting each magnet switch component together with the spring and plunger. The procedure starts with removing the two through bolts before extracting the starter yoke with the starter commutator end frame and separating these components from the frame. Next proceed by taking out the starter armature plate from the starter yoke then separate the starter commutator end frame cover using a screwdriver. To service the starter armature assembly start by using snap ring pliers to extract the snap ring before you remove the washer together with the starter armature from the starter commutator end frame. To complete this task extract first the three planetary gears from the starter center bearing clutch before removing both the starter center bearing clutch and starter drive lever set pin from inside the starter drive housing. Slide out the starter drive lever set pin from inside the starter center bearing clutch. The magnet switch body must pass an inspection which checks its operational state and electrical resistance against 1 Ohm maximum between terminals 50 and C and 2 Ohm maximum between terminal 50 and the switch body before replacement. The starter armature assembly requires testing for commutator segment resistance which must be 1 Ohm or less while the armature coil core resistance should exceed 10 kOhm; replace any non-compliant components. After cleaning the commutator surface with 400-grit sandpaper use vernier calipers to measure its depth then replace it if exceeding the maximum 3.8 mm. The minimum measurement must be 3.1 mm. Measure the brush length within the starter commutator end frame assembly and replace it if less than 4.0 mm or more than 9.0 mm. The brush holder needs replacement if resistance measures less than 10 kOhm between positive and negative brushes. Operate the starter center bearing clutch sub-assembly through clockwise and counterclockwise motion of its clutch pinion gear to confirm free rotation and locking ability; perform a replacement if required along with inspecting gear teeth for wear or damage. Place the starter drive lever set pin into the starter center bearing clutch and subsequently position the starter center bearing clutch inside the starter drive housing. Spend grease on planetary gears and shaft pins before adding the three planetary gears to the starter center bearing clutch. Install the starter armature along with a washer onto the starter commutator end frame by using snap ring tools to add a new snap ring that should remain under 5.0 mm in length. The starter commutator end frame cover should be placed onto the starter commutator end frame followed by positioning the starter armature plate onto the starter yoke. The installer should position the rubber against the cutout of the starter yoke and establish the starter commutator end frame onto it while utilizing a process of bolting alignment through key of starter yoke and keyway of starter drive housing before tightening the bolts to 6.0 N.m torque. You must start by applying grease to the plunger and hook before hanging them on the starter drive lever set pin. Then incorporate the plunger and return spring before securing the magnet switch with two screws at 7.5 N.m torque and connecting the lead wire to terminal C with a nut tightened to 10 N.m.
