2004 Toyota Corolla Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to replace the rear speed sensor on 2004 Toyota Corolla?
A: Before starting the replacement of the rear speed sensor users need to detach the rear wheel and the rear brake drum sub-assembly. The skid control sensor wire needs disconnection for which you must remove its connector from the sensor. The process starts with taking out the rear axle hub and bearing assembly on the left-hand side followed by taking out the skid control sensor while mounting the rear axle hub in a soft jaw vise. A replacement becomes necessary whenever a strong shock hits or causes the dropping of the axle hub assembly. The 2 pins should be driven out with a pin punch and hammer before using Special Service Tool: 09520-00031 (09520-00040), 09521-00020, 09950-00020 to remove the 2 attachments while also removing the 2 bolts (Diameter: 12 mm, pitch: 1.5 mm). Substitution of the axle hub assembly becomes necessary when the sensor rotor shows damage while maintenance workers should exercise caution to prevent scratches on the contact areas between the axle hub and speed sensor. The installation process requires a clean contacting surface on both the axle hub and new speed sensor where the sensor rotor should remain free of any foreign elements. Install the speed sensor onto the axle hub keeping the connector at the lowest point then complete the installation with Special Service Tool: 09214-76011 and a press. Reinstall the rear axle hub and bearing assembly of the left-hand side followed by reconnecting the skid control sensor wire then reinstalling the rear brake drum sub-assembly along with the rear wheel while torquing to 103 Nm (1,050 kgf-cm, 76 ft. lbs.). The final step entails inspecting as well as adjusting rear wheel alignment followed by a sensor signal evaluation for ABS.
