2004 Toyota Avalon Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to service the Air Bag Control Module and Side Air Bag Sensor Assembly on 2004 Toyota Avalon?
A: You must first take out the rear seat cushion before proceeding to remove the rear door scuff plate followed by the front door scuff plate and center pillar lower garnish. The retractor of the front seat outer belt needs removal followed by connector disconnection from the side Air Bag sensor assembly while maintaining the sensor assembly in position. To proceed further remove three bolts which fasten down the side Air Bag sensor assembly. Begin by installing the side Air Bag sensor assembly with its three bolts while applying torque to 20 N.m (205 kgf.cm and 15 ft.lbf) before adding the connector along the installed sensor assembly. Old side Air Bag sensor assemblies must never see usage because they lost service life after either deployment or because they become involved in a vehicle impact. The replacement of the sensor assembly becomes necessary when any damage that includes cracks or dents appear. After sensor installation verify that the SRS wiring does not create interference with other components nor get pinched and shake the sensor assembly to check for looseness. Use a torque wrench at 7.4 N.m (75 kgf.cm, 65 in.lbf) for the upper bolt on the front seat outer belt and 41 N.m (420 kgf.cm, 30 ft.lbf) for the lower bolt before adding the center pillar lower garnish, front door scuff plate, rear door scuff plate, and completing with the rear seat cushion.
