2004 Toyota 4Runner Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace a TPMS Sensor on 2004 Toyota 4Runner?
A: The Tire Pressure Monitor Valve Sub-Assembly needs replacement as of August 2003 yet the first step requires removing the front and rear wheels. Detach the tire pressure monitor valve sub-assembly after removing its valve core, replacing the cap and letting tire air out. First release adequate air from the tire then remove the securing nut along with washer to drop the sensor into the tire chamber. Detach the tire bead while using tire remover shoe equipment when possible but maintain distance between the sensor and tire bead to avoid damaging the tire pressure monitor valve sub-assembly. Regularly remove the bead from the top part before extracting the sensor from the tire before removing the second bead. Tear the inner grommet outside the tire pressure monitor valve sub-assembly while assessing its condition for cracks or damage; if issues exist the grommet needs replacement with both washer and nut. The tire pressure monitor valve sub-assembly gets installed through the valve installation hole by insertion from within the rim where the print surface becomes visible. Thorough visual inspection must find no deformations or foreign objects both on the inner grommet and around the rim hole as bad installation could damage the valve while leading to signal transmission failure. Position the washer on the tire pressure monitor valve from the outside and fasten it using the provided nut at 4.0 Nm (41 kgf-cm, 35 in.-lbf) torque. During inflation check for air leaks using soapy water and then tighten the valve nut according to specifications. Fasten the wheel disc onto the mounting machine and apply the lower tire bead while placing the sensor main body inside the shaded installation area to prevent potential interferences. Fitting the upper tire bead must be done while keeping the sensor and tire bead free from both components. You must install the front wheel with 103 Nm torque and rear wheel with 1,050 kgf-cm (76 ft-lbf) torque. Then inspect the tire followed by transmitter ID registration and tire pressure warning system check. When disposing of this unit remove the battery from the pressure monitor valve assembly by peel off its protective cover then disconnect the terminal leads between the battery and base board which stand underneath a silicone resin layer.
