2004 Scion xB Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the radiator assembly on 2004 Scion xB?
A: Engine coolant drainage must take place as the first step before disconnecting radiator hose inlets and outlets and automatic transaxle oil cooler inlet and outlet hoses. Start the radiator grille and front bumper cover and hood lock assembly removal by removing the 3 bolts and clip and hood lock hardware. The hood lock support brace should be removed by unscrewing all 5 bolts before you can take the radiator support opening cover off by detaching its 2 clips. Remove the horn assembly connector then take out 2 bolts that separate the condenser from the radiator support upper and follow it up by taking out 4 bolts to detach the radiator support upper. The radiator assembly removal starts with disconnecting the cooling fan motor connector followed by 3 bolt removal for detaching the fan shroud with fan and using 2 bolts to remove the water filler. The radiator support lower and its 2 cushions must be taken off followed by removal of the radiator support lower. Begin by placing the radiator support lower together with radiator support cushions onto the radiator then follow by installing the water filler through 2 bolts which require a torque of 7.5 Nm (76 kgf-cm, 66 in. lbs.). Afterwards, install the fan shroud with fan through 3 bolts torqued to 7.5 Nm (76 kgf-cm, 66 in. lbs.). Reestablish the cooling fan motor connector and attach the radiator assembly sequence. The next step involves using 4 bolts to fix the radiator support upper while torquing them to 5.0 Nm (51 kgf-cm, 44 in. lbs.) and then connecting the condenser with 2 bolts torqued to 9.8 Nm (100 kgf-cm, 7.2 ft. lbs) on the radiator support upper. Finally, secure the horn assembly connector. Attach the hood lock support brace with 5 bolts applying torque of 5.0 Nm before putting in the hood lock assembly with 3 bolts torqued to 8.0 Nm. Reinstall the front bumper cover then adjust the hood sub-assembly while monitoring for leaks in addition to performing engine coolant addition.
