• Q: How to replace the PARK/NEUTRAL SAFETY SWITCH ASSY (ATM) on 2004 Scion xB?

  A: The first step to replace the PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH ASSY (ATM) requires the battery removal. The transmission control cable assembly can be separated by unfastening the nut to detach the control cable from the control shaft lever and detaching it from the control cable bracket with the clip. After disconnecting the park/neutral switch connector you must remove the nut, washer, control shaft lever and pry out the lock plate before removing the manual valve shaft nut. Access the park/neutral position switch assembly by first uninstalling its two mounting bolts and subsequently pull it forward. Installation of the park/neutral position switch assembly requires attachment to the manual valve shaft together with a new lock plate before securing the manual valve shaft nut to 6.9 Nm (70 kgf-cm, 61 in. lbs.). Fasten the two control bolts and the control shaft lever to their proper positions followed by counterclockwise rotation to stop before clockwise movement of two notches then remove the lever. Position the switch at the neutral basic line, keep it in this spot, then fasten the two bolts to 5.4 Nm torque (55 kgf-cm, 48 in. lbs). Plug the screwdriver into the lock plate nut before adding the control shaft lever and washer along with the nut. Close the fastener to a torque of 13 Nm (130 kgf-cm, 9 ft. lbs.). The connector must be attached to the assembly containing the park/neutral position switch. Place a new clip on the bracket before inserting the control cable. Then fasten the control cable onto the control shaft lever by installing the nut.
