2004 Scion xA Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to replace a Speed Sensor on 2004 Scion xA?
A: The first step to replacing the skid control sensor is to remove the rear wheel then disconnect the skid control sensor wire by unlocking its electrical connection. Mark the brake sub-assy alignment matchmarks before taking it out from its position. Install the hub & bearing assembly in a soft jaw vise and replace it when it suffers strong shock or falls. Use the pin punch and hammer to push out the 2 pins from Special Service Tool and free both its attachments for removal. Use Special Service Tool: 09520-00031 (09520-00040), 09521-00020, 09950-00020, and 2 bolts (12 mm diameter and 1.5 mm pitch) to take the skid control sensor off the rear axle hub unit while avoiding damage to its contact area. Clean the contacting surfaces of the rear axle hub and new skid control sensor afterward position the sensor so that its connector reaches the lowest point during installation. Use Special Service Tool: 09214-76011 and a press to install the skid control sensor using a straight and slow press technique that excludes any foreign elements from the detection element of the sensor. Attach the left-hand rear axle hub & bearing assembly then test rear axle motion and backing space. Position the brake drum parts according to their matching marks during reinstallation. Plug the sensor wire into place then bolt the rear wheel by turning its parts to 103 Nm torque (1,050 kgf-cm, 76 ft. lbs). Complete the final test by examining the ABS speed sensor measurement result.
