2004 Scion xA Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the radiator assembly on 2004 Scion xA?
A: The replacement of the radiator assembly demands coolant drain and subsequent removal of the hose connections and automatic transaxle oil cooler hoses. The replacement process starts by disconnecting the radiator grille and hood lock assembly through three bolt removal and the hood lock support sub-assembly requires removal of two bolts along with a clip and the support piece. The next step requires the removal of two clips from the radiator support opening cover while you disconnect the horn assembly connector before unfastening two bolts to separate the condenser from the upper radiator support then using four bolts to detach the radiator support upper. The radiator removal process starts with disconnecting the cooling fan motor connector before extracting the radiator assembly from the engine compartment. Then detach the fan shroud combined with fan by removing 3 bolts while also taking off the water filler using 2 bolts before proceeding to uninstall the radiator support cushions and radiator support lower. The first step of installation requires laying the radiator support cushions and radiator support lower onto the radiator followed by attaching the water filler with 2 bolts torqued to 7.5 Nm (76 kgf-cm, 66 inch lbs.). Next, install the fan shroud with fan using 3 bolts tightened to the same torque setting. After assembly of the radiator run the cooling fan motor connector back into place. Install 4 bolts on the radiator support sub-assembly upper until they reach 5.0 Nm (51 kgf-cm, 44 inch lbs.). Then attach the condenser to the upper using 2 bolts before reconnecting the horn assembly connector. Attach the radiator support opening cover and then install the hood lock support sub-assembly with 2 bolts and a clip at 5.0 Nm (51 kgf-cm, 44 inch lbs.) before fitting the hood lock assembly with its 3 bolts. Adjust the hood sub-assembly before installing the radiator grille then fill the engine with coolant while inspecting for any coolant leak points.
