2004 Scion xA Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the FLOOR SHIFT PARKING BRAKE CABLE ASSY (ATM) on 2004 Scion xA?
A: The first step to replace the FLOOR SHIFT PARKING LOCK CABLE ASSY (ATM) requires you to disconnect the negative terminal of the battery. The maintenance procedure requires front wheels to face straight ahead before removing the horn button assembly together with the steering wheel assembly, steering column cover, instrument cluster finish panel, instrument cluster finish panel garnish No.2, instrument cluster finish panel garnish No.1, instrument cluster finish panel assembly center, front ash receptacle assembly, instrument cover lower center, instrument panel finish panel lower center, console box rear cover, console box carpet, and console box assembly rear. Connectors to the floor shift parking lock cable assembly happen by rotating the adjust lock cap clockwise 90° while pushing the claw to release from the shift lock release link and using a screwdriver to unfasten the cable from the shift lever plate followed by clamp removal. The lever should be set to N and an upper bracket connector needs disconnection. Install the new floor shift parking lock cable assembly by first switching the ignition to ACC or ON then fastening the cable to the upper bracket where the lever pin should be attracted by the cable into contact with the stopper before installing the cable clamp. The N position shift lever enables insertion of the cable assembly into the shift lever plate where the casing cap must be properly secured. To verify automatic adjustment put the cable end with the lever pin inside the hole while the shift lever remains in N position then operate the slide cap to check the spring function. The adjust lock cap requires counterclockwise rotation of 90 degrees when the key sits in ACC position and the spring slide should measure 8 mm (0.31 inch). Follow the steps of re-installing the console box assembly rear and console box carpet before putting on the console box rear cover, instrument cluster finish panel followed by steering column cover and steering wheel assembly maintenance while centering the steering wheel properly before adding the horn button assembly and reconnecting the battery negative terminal. Then inspect the horn button assembly and SRS warning light and key interlock operation.
