2003 Toyota Tacoma Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to service and repair the water pump on 2003 Toyota Tacoma?
A: Vehicle repair and service of the water pump starts with engine under cover removal followed by draining engine coolant from the system. The fan shroud air pipe disconnects through 2 bolt removal followed by upper radiator hose separation from the radiator. The service begins by disassembling the oil dipstick guide through bolt removal with the guide and engine wire bracket. Keep the original O-ring nearby until it can be used for reassembly. You must remove power steering drive belts by releasing their lock bolt and adjusting bolt. The procedure starts with the 2 clip removal and subsequent removal of No.2 fan shroud before progressing to unscrewing 4 bolts from the No.1 fan shroud. To remove the A/C compressor drive belt start by unwinding the idler pulley nut and adjusting bolt to free the belt. Remove the drive belt for the generator and both the fan with fluid coupling along with the water pump pulley by using tools to loosen the generator pivot bolt and lock bolt and adjusting bolt and after that remove the belts and water pump pulley nuts with torque quality established as 21 Nm (210 kgf-cm, 16 ft. lbs.). Extract the fan mechanism together with both the fluid coupling and water pump pulley. There are three essential steps to remove the water pump starting with the 10 bolts before taking out the water pump and gasket accompanied by torque settings of 24.5 Nm (250 kgf-cm, 18 ft. lbs.) for 14 mm and 8.9 Nm (90 kgf-cm, 78 inch lbs.) for 12 mm. During installation always utilize a new gasket. Check each hole of the water pump for coolant leakage when conducting an inspection. Also verify smooth operation and quiet behavior of the water pump bearing. Replace the water pump if any malfunctioning is detected. The fluid coupling requires the removal of its 4 nuts and fan for inspections to detect damage and silicon oil leakage which must be replaced if necessary until a final reinstall occurs with the 4 nuts torqued at 5.5 Nm (55 kgf-cm, 49 inch lbs.). Random last phase reinstalls all removed components in their reverse retrieval sequence.
