2002 Toyota Tacoma Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to Service and Repair a Water Pump on 2002 Toyota Tacoma?
A: You need to start procedures of water pump repair by removing engine under cover while draining engine coolant completely. Uninstall the air pipe from the fan shroud after you remove its 2 bolts followed by taking off the upper radiator hose from the radiator. The oil dipstick guide requires removal along with its bolt and dipstick guide and engine wire bracket and O-ring which needs to be replaced with a new one during assembly. Before servicing the power steering components of the model you need to remove the power steering pump drive belt using the lock bolt adjuster's bolts. Begin by first removing fan shrouds starting with two clips then taking out the Number Two fan shroud and finishing with the removal of four bolts and Number One fan shroud. Start by disconnecting the drive belt of the A/C compressor when you loosen its idler pulley nut and adjusting bolt. Start by loosening the water pump pulley nuts and the lock bolt and pivot bolt of the generator and generator adjusting bolt before removing both drive belts and the 4 water pump pulley nuts at an application torque of 21 Nm (210 kgf-cm, 16 ft. lbs.). The procedure requires a fan removal followed by extraction of the fluid coupling and water pump pulley. The water pump removal procedure includes unbolting 10 screws and removing the water pump while applying 24.5 Nm torque to both 14 mm and 12 mm heads respectively. You must use new gaskets when reinstalling the water pump. Regular inspection of the water pump's coolant leakage at the air hole and drain hole should be followed by a smooth running test of the water pump bearing; if faults appear the water pump should be changed. If the fluid coupling shows signs of damage or silicon oil leakage the technician replaces the parts before securely mounting the fan and fluid coupling using the 4 nuts with a torque setting of 5.5 Nm (55 kgf-cm, 49 inch lbs.). The completion of installation follows the reverse sequence of uninstallation work.
