2003 Toyota Sequoia Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to perform the timing belt service and repair on 2003 Toyota Sequoia?
A: The timing belt service requires you to start by taking out engine under cover followed by draining engine coolant before removing the radiator assembly. The next step involves removing the throttle body cover and intake air connector assembly before proceeding to disassemble the drive belt with the fan and fluid coupling together with the fan pulley by loosening the 4 nuts holding down the fluid coupling to the fan bracket. You should detach the PS pump through 3 bolt removal while keeping it in a stable position. Start by removing the drive belt idler pulley and then the RH No.3 timing belt cover together with the LH No.3 timing belt cover while disconnecting engine wire and camshaft position sensor wires. The No.2 timing belt cover needs removal after disconnecting the A/C compressor when present along with removing the fan bracket. When using an existing timing belt you need to confirm the presence of installation marks. Set the No.1 cylinder at TDC/compression by using Special Service Tool: 09213-70011 (90105-08076), 09330-00021 to loosen the crankshaft pulley bolt. Align the crankshaft pulley groove with the timing mark "0" of the No.1 timing belt cover. Once the tensioner is removed workers should disconnect the timing belt from the camshaft timing pulleys through Special Service Tool: 09960-10010 (09962-01000, 09963-01000) before taking away the camshaft timing pulleys. Work with Special Service Tool: 09950-50013 (09951-05010, 09952-05010, 09953-05010, 09953-05020, 09954-05021) to remove the generator, drive belt tensioner, along with the crankshaft pulley. Remove the No.1 timing belt cover together with timing belt guide and timing belt while marking it for resuse. The technicians should get rid of both No.1 and No.2 idler pulleys together with the crankshaft timing pulley. Examine the timing belt for any defects and check idler pulleys for oil leakage together with their operational smoothness while observing that the timing belt tensioner exhibits proper protrusion without oil leakage. Place the crankshaft timing pulley correctly through set key operation while applying adhesive to the pivot bolts on both No.1 and No.2 idler pulleys to ensure easy movement. Place the timing belt on the crankshaft timing pulley while aligning it properly before making it a temporary installation. Place the timing belt cover spacer as well as timing belt guide then install the No.1 timing belt cover. Install the drive belt tensioner before checking the crankshaft pulley position while tapping in the crankshaft pulley. The RH and LH camshaft timing pulleys should receive the timing belt which requires clean pulleys for proper installation. Set up the timing belt tensioner before installing its bolts and use the crankshaft pulley to verify valve timing. Secure the crankshaft pulley bolt with Special Service Tool: 09213-70011 (90119-08216), 09330-00021 before placing the fan bracket along with the A/C compressor if necessary and installing the No.2 timing belt cover and RH and LH No.3 timing belt covers while checking all connections. The final installation includes drive belt idler pulley and PS pump followed by fan pulley and fan along with fluid coupling and drive belt. The procedure ends with intake air connector assembly installation and throttle body cover, radiator assembly, engine coolant filling, leak test after engine start-up and engine under cover reinstallation.
