2002 Toyota Sequoia Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove and install the timing belt on 2002 Toyota Sequoia?
A: The first step to replace the timing belt requires removing the engine under cover together with draining engine coolant and uninstalling the radiator assembly. Start by taking off the throttle body cover then disconnect the intake air connector assembly and continue by removing the drive belt and fan and fluid coupling and fan pulley through the process of loosening first the 4 nuts which secure the fluid coupling to the fan bracket then removing the drive belt together with the fan and fluid coupling assembly. Unplug the PS pump by taking out its 3 bolts before securely hanging the unit. The drive belt idler pulley requires removal by uninstalling the bolt and idler pulley along with the cover plate. The RH No.3 timing belt cover removal begins by disassembling three bolts and a nut before moving to the LH No.3 timing belt cover process where engine wire disconnect occurs from two wire clamps followed by four bolt and nut removal and separating the camshaft position sensor wire and connector and finishing with cover and bolt and nut and oil cooler pipe removal. The No.2 timing belt cover can be removed after unbolting its two mounting bolts. Owners with A/C units should first detach the A/C compressor from the engine before proceeding to remove the fan bracket through removal of its 2 bolts and 2 nuts. Before timing belt reuse you must check the crankshaft pulley has three installation marks; add new ones if any marks are missing. To line up the No.1 cylinder at TDC/compression position you should loosen the crankshaft pulley bolt with Special Service Tool: 09213-70011 (90105-08076), 09330-00021 while aligning the crankshaft pulley groove with timing mark "0" of the No.1 timing belt cover to maintain the camshaft timing pulleys and timing belt rear plates alignment. You should remove the crankshaft pulley bolt from its position without rotating the crankshaft pulley. The purpose of Special Service Tool 09960-10010 (09962-01000, 09963-01000) is to loosen the tension splint for timing belt removal. Place new installation marks on the timing belt if reusing it. The operator uses Special Service Tool: 09950-50013 (09951-05010, 09952-05010, 09953-05010, 09953-05020, 09954-05011) to take off the generator and drive belt tensioner and crankshaft pulley after removing the camshaft timing pulleys with the same tool. The shop procedure requires removal of the No.1 timing belt cover, timing belt guide, and timing belt cover spacer before timing belt removal. Reuse of the belt requires placing new installation marks. Use a 10 mm hexagon wrench to remove the No.1 idler pulley followed by the No.2 idler pulley before proceeding to the crankshaft timing pulley without turning it. Examine the timing belt for any defects while also verifying that it remains straight and does not touch fluids or exposed to water or steam. Also verify that idler pulleys and timing belt tensioner operate without leakage. Begin the installation process with the crankshaft timing pulley which requires Special Service Tool: 09223-46011 to tap into the key groove through its alignment with the timing pulley set key. Proceed with installing the No.1 and No.2 idler pulleys on the pivot bolt where adhesive has been used to ensure proper smooth movement. The engine must remain cold and clean at this time while the timing belt gets installed with its installation mark pointing towards the crankshaft timing pulley. Position the timing belt cover spacer together with its guide then install the No.1 timing belt cover and crankshaft pulley taking care to maintain correct alignment. The installation process requires you to put in the drive belt tensioner and generator before checking the position of the crankshaft pulley. Proceed to install both RH and LH camshaft timing pulleys by attaching the timing belt to each one and maintaining cleanliness. Set the new timing belt tensioner then install it only temporarily before inspecting valve operation by rotating the crankshaft pulley. Secure the crankshaft pulley bolt through the use of Special Service Tools: 09213-70011 (90119-08216), 09330-00021 while installing first the fan bracket, then the A/C compressor if installed, followed by the No.2 timing belt cover together with the RH and LH No.3 timing belt covers to ensure proper fastening. The sequence for installation ends with the intake air connector assembly together with the throttle body cover but starts by installing the drive belt idler pulley followed by the PS pump and fan pulley and fan which are placed before the fluid coupling and drive belt. Finally, complete the installation by adding engine coolant before starting up the engine to look for leaks. The final step is to recheck the coolant level and secure the engine under cover.
