2003 Toyota Prius Fan Motor Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to service and repair the Radiator Cooling Fan Motor on 2003 Toyota Prius?
A: Service and repair of the Radiator Cooling Fan Motor requires discharging the refrigerant from the refrigeration system followed by evacuation and recharge of 500 plus or minus 50 g (17.64 plus or minus 1.76 oz.) refrigerant before leak inspection. Before removing the radiator from service it is essential to drain engine coolant but the entire liquid should not be extracted. Remove the water hose from the fan shroud before you take out 5 bolts and 2 brackets from their positions. When installing new O-rings with compressor oil on the suction and discharge hoses users should first remove 2 bolts and then torque these openings to 10 Nm (100 kgf-cm, 7 ft. lbs.). Widen the 2 nuts while removing the hoses by torquing the suction hose to 32 Nm (330 kgf-cm, 24 ft. lbs.) and the discharge hose to 22 Nm (225 kgf-cm, 16 ft. lbs.). Repeat the process of lubricating new O-rings before reinstallation. Remove radiator hoses by slipping off the clamp and removing both ends from the radiator and condenser module. The electric cooling fan assembly can be detached by disconnecting both connectors followed by unscrewing two bolts then lifting and lowering the assembly to remove it. Cleaning the coolant reservoir is followed by disassembly which includes six screws and two fans and a connector disconnect and removal of six screws and two motors from the fan shroud. The reverse sequence of disassembly matches the sequence of reassembly and installation procedures.
