2003 Toyota MR2 Spyder Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to service and repair the throttle body for both manual transmission (M/T) and sequential manual transmission (SMT) on 2003 Toyota MR2 Spyder?
A: The service and repair of the throttle body starts by draining the engine coolant followed by the removal of the suspension upper brace and moves on to manual transmission (M/T) and sequential manual transmission (SMT). The M/T throttle body service begins with VSV for EVAP disconnection from the air cleaner hose then removes the air cleaner hose while disconnecting the accelerator cable before removing the throttle body through separation of throttle position sensor and IAC valve connectors and PCV hose removal and water bypass hose capture followed by removal of two bolts and two nuts and the throttle body and two gaskets from the intake manifold together with the accelerator cable bracket. The procedure for SMT immersion element testing is identical to M/T while adding throttle control motor and VSV for EVAP hose removal steps before proceeding to disconnect the throttle position sensor connector and throttle control motor connector and PCV hose and two water bypass hoses and remove the throttle body bracket together with its gaskets. The throttle valve in M/T vehicles must have no gap between the throttle stop screw and throttle lever as the system reaches a fully closed position. Appearing during SMT testing should be two resistance checks for the throttle control motor. Check M+ to M- terminals for 0.3 to 100 Ohm resistance while the temperature is at 20 degrees Celsius (68 degrees Fahrenheit). Also test CL- to CL+ terminals for 4.2 to 5.2 Ohm resistance at 20 degrees Celsius (68 degrees Fahrenheit). The resistance measurement between terminals VC and E2 must range from 1.2 KOhm to 3.2 KOhm at 20 degrees Celsius (68 degrees Fahrenheit). The throttle position sensor installation requires users to detach the set screws before installing the new sensor and to adjust its throttle valve opening to approximately 4 degrees while connecting the sensor connector and setting the throttle valve opening to 15.2 0.8%. Confirm that the throttle valve opening percentage lies between 10 and 14 percent during and after installation. When installing the accelerator position sensor replace the four bolts then install the sensor and verify that the ACCEL POS #1 (VPA) measurement stays within 0.3 to 0.9 V. After installing two new gaskets on the throttle body proceed to connect all hoses and refuel the radiator with engine coolant. The necessary torque value amounts to 30 N.m (306 kgf.cm, 22 ft.lbf) for the throttle body along with 49 N.m (500 kgf.cm, 36 ft.lbf) for the throttle body bracket.
