2003 Toyota MR2 Spyder Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the power steering pump on 2003 Toyota MR2 Spyder?
A: Service and repair of the power steering pump starts by taking off the reservoir cap and removing the reservoir by unclamping and extracting it from its position before you retrieve the O-ring from the power steering vane pump housing. The next step removes the rear housing with its oil strainer through a procedure of extracting four bolts and a single O-ring from the housing. Next follow these steps by removing the cam ring then the vane pump rotor and lastly the 10 plates of the vane pump while safeguarding the plates from accidental damage after which detach the lower side plate. You need snap ring pliers to eliminate the snap ring before extracting the spring seat and service bolt combination to remove the flow control valve and spring and O-ring from the spring seat. To remove the O-ring located on the side plate, use a plastic-faced hammer for tapping the upper side plate and wave washer. Use a micrometer to inspect the vane pump rotor and vane plates for height at least 5.4 mm and thickness at minimum 0.882 mm and length measuring 4.596 mm while verifying the vane pump rotor groove clearance at most 0.023 mm. Confirm the flow control valve by coating it with power steering fluid followed by smooth insertion into the valve hole and pressurized air examination between 392 - 490 kPa. Free spring length measurement requires vernier calipers to reach minimum 28.7 mm marking. The spring must be replaced when its length falls below this measurement. Replace the union seat by using a screw extractor before inserting the new seat gently through tapping. Install flow control valve together with proper orientation of spring seat after applying power steering fluid on these components and using new O-ring. Install the lower side plate facing its correct position before adding the cam ring with vane pump rotor above it where inscribed marking faces upward. Begin with the installation of 10 vane plates and proceed by adding the upper side plate with its new O-ring which should be followed by the wave washer. Before completion securely mount the reservoir with its new O-ring and set it to 7.0 Nm torque while implementing a proper reservoir cap installation.
