2003 Toyota Highlander Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace a Neutral Safety Switch on 2003 Toyota Highlander?
A: The first step to replace the Transmission Position Switch/Sensor entails removing Engine Under Cover No.1. The next step requires disassembly of the floor shift transmission control cable assembly through two procedures. First, remove the control shaft lever nut then disconnect the cable from the lever before taking off the cable clip to uncouple the cable from its bracket. Start by disconnecting the park/neutral position switch assembly by removing the nut then washer along with control shaft lever followed by prying out the lock plate then removing the manual valve shaft nut and ending with detaching the two bolts to pull out the switch. The installation of the park/neutral position switch requires you to mount it onto the manual valve shaft followed by adding new lock plate equipment then applying a torque of 6.9 Nm (70 kgf-cm and 61 inch lbs.). Two bolts and the control shaft lever require temporary installation while the lever turns counterclockwise until stopping and then clockwise two notches before removal. The switch should be placed into position while aligning with the neutral basic line before securing the two bolts to 5.4 Nm (55 kgf-cm, 48 inch lbs.). After using a screwdriver to stake the nut with the lock plate you should install the control shaft lever along with its washer and tightening the nut to 12.7 Nm (130 kgf-cm, 9 ft. lbs.). The installer should attach the control cable to the control shaft lever using nuts before fastening the control cable and clip to the bracket. Examine the shift lever position before installing it with the park/neutral position switch assembly.
