2002 Toyota Highlander Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace a Neutral Safety Switch on 2002 Toyota Highlander?
A: Before beginning to replace the Transmission Position Switch/Sensor start by taking off engine under cover No. 1. The first step to replace the Transmission Position Switch/Sensor includes taking out the nut from the control shaft lever followed by disconnecting the control cable from both the lever and bracket by removing its clip. First remove the park/neutral position switch assembly after disconnecting its nut and washer then removing control shaft lever and manually prying out the lock plate. The manual valve shaft nut should then be removed followed by removal of two bolts to extract the switch. To install the park/neutral position switch you must first attach it to the manual valve shaft while placing new lock plate security before tightening the nut to 6.9 Nm torque (70 kgf cm or 61 inch lbs.). At first attach only the control shaft lever and two bolts (install counterclockwise until it stops and move clockwise two notches) before removing these components. Position the switch with the neutral basic line groove while tightening the torque of two bolts to 5.4 Nm (55 kgf-cm, 48 inch lbs.). Stake the lock plate nut using a screwdriver before installing the control shaft lever along with washer and nut which requires a torque of 12.7 Nm (130 kgf-cm, 9 ft. lbs.). Start by attaching the control cable to the control shaft lever through installation of nuts followed by hooking the control cable and clip onto the bracket. Complete the adjustment then inspection of both shift lever position and park/neutral position switch assembly.
