2003 Toyota Corolla Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to overhaul the Rack And Pinion on 2003 Toyota Corolla?
A: A start to rack and pinion overhaul requires coating the mentioned components with power steering fluid or molybdenum disulfide lithium base grease. Begin by removing the battery negative terminal then check the center front wheel before using Special Service Tool: 09950-50013 along with (09951-05010, 09952-05010, 09953-05020, 09954-05021) to separate the horn button assembly and steering wheel assembly. The first step involves using Special Service Tool: 09628-62011 to detach the tie rod end sub-assemblies from both sides after removing front wheels, engine under covers and cleaning their parts with power steering fluid along with molybdenum disulfide lithium base grease. SST 09023-38400 is required to remove both the column hole cover silencer sheet and steering intermediate shaft and pressure feed tube assembly. The service technician disconnects the return tube sub-assembly together with the front stabilizer link assemblies and front suspension arm sub-assemblies from both sides. Use engine hangers (No.1: 12281-22021 and No.2: 12281-15040 along with Bolt: 91512-B1016 at 38 Nm torque) to suspend the engine assembly after removing the hood sub-assembly with the cylinder head cover No.2. First remove the front suspension crossmember sub-assembly together with steering column hole cover sub-assembly No.1 and steering intermediate shaft while marking the installation matchmarks for future reference. Secure the rack and pinion assemblyinto a vise by using Special Service Tool: 09612-00012. Start by removing both turn pressure tubes through the use of Special Service Tool: 09023-38200 while inspecting tie rod end sub-assemblies for wear signs on both sides. Several special service tools help remove the power steering rack boots together with steering rack end elements, rack guide, power steering control valve, and their accompanying seals. Check the power steering rack for its condition regarding run out and wear before installing new bearing assemblies and seals while maintaining the correct orientation. The power steering rack requires installation together with the bush sub-assembly and the cylinder end stopper before the power steering control valve goes in along with its components according to standard torque limitations. Please reinstall the rack guide while checking total preload and adjust if needed. Begin the installation of steering rack end sub-assemblies while checking that no grease enters the steering rack hole. After installation, the steering rack boots need installation. Constructed tie rod end sub-assemblies will be connected while adding pressure tubes and return tubes and the rack and pinion assemblyuntil all bolts achieve required torque quantities. After reestablishing connections for the steering intermediate shaft and front suspension parts you should proceed with connecting engine under covers and front wheels. After the inspection of the center front wheel install the column hole cover silencer sheet to complete the procedure by adding power steering fluid while bleeding the system and looking for any signs of leakage. The final steps involve replacing the cylinder head cover No.2 along with the hood sub-assembly and steering wheel assembly after confirming all inspection requirements, warning light and adjustment processes are completed.
