2003 Toyota 4Runner Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to Overhaul the Power Rack And Pinion Link Assembly on 2003 Toyota 4Runner?
A: The first step for fixing the Power Rack And Pinion Link Assembly begins with disconnecting the negative battery terminal while ensuring the wheels remain parallel with the road. Start the power rack and pinion link assembly overhaul by disconnecting the negative battery terminal while positioning the front wheels straight ahead. Proceed to remove the horn button assembly followed by the rack and pinion wheel assembly using Special Service Tool: 09950-50013 (09951-05010, 09952-05010, 09953-05020, 09954-05021). After removing the steering column cover lower and turn signal switch assembly and spiral cable sub-assembly, detach the engine under cover assembly rear with 6 bolts and engine under cover sub-assembly No.1 with 4 bolts. The first step involves disconnecting the stabilizer bar front and then dismantling the left and right tie rod end sub-assemblies by removing their nut and cotter pin before using Special Service Tool: 09628-62011 to separate them from the rack and pinion knuckle arm. The disconnect procedure for the pressure feed tube assembly requires Special Service Tool: 09023-12700 while also removing the outlet return tube. Detach the power rack and pinion link assembly through steps which require the removal of 2 bolts along with 2 nuts while performing the bolt turning operation instead of the nuts. Fasten the power rack and pinion link assembly with Special Service Tool: 09023-38200 and clamp the Rack And Pinion assembly inside the vise with Special Service Tool: 09612-00012. Detach both sides tie rod end sub-assemblies along with steering rack boot clamps and clips from the system while protecting damage to the boot material. Remove the steering rack boot along with the steering rack end sub-assembly through Special Service Tool: 09922-10010 while also detaching the rack guide. When removing the power rack and pinion control valve along with its components you need to handle the oil seal lip with specific care. The power rack and pinion should be thoroughly examined for potential blockages while all tie rod end sub-assemblies need to be checked for appropriate torques. Proceed with installing new O-rings along with teflon rings to the steering rack until the power rack and pinion is installed correctly by checking the oil seal direction. Install the cylinder end stopper then torque it to 145 Nm (1,479 kgf-cm, 107 ft. lbs.) while using Special Service Tool: 09631-12071 (09633-00010) to perform an air tightness test which must show no vacuum change.
