2003 Toyota 4Runner Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to Replace the Crankshaft Seal in a Timing Gear Case on 2003 Toyota 4Runner?
A: The procedure for replacing the timing gear case or timing chain case oil seal starts with removal of the V-bank cover followed by removing the radiator support seal upper by dissolving the 11 clips. First remove Sub-assy Engine Under Cover No.1 from the engine by taking out its 4 bolts. The routine requires loosening and removing the fan with fluid coupling followed by generator V belt removal and ultimately eliminating the fan with fluid coupling. The crankshaft pulley removal requires Special Service Tools 09213-54015 (91651-60855), 09330-00021 and 0995-50013 (09951-05010, 09952-05010, 09953-05020, 09954-05030). A screwdriver should be used to pry out the oil seal while wrapped tape safeguards the crankshaft from damage. Install the new oil seal by applying MP grease to its lip followed by using Special Service Tool: 09226-10010 and tapping it in with a hammer until it reaches the timing chain cover edge. After installing Special Service Tool: 09213-54015 (91651-60855), 09330-00021, replace the crankshaft pulley before reattaching the fan with fluid coupling and installing the fan and generator V belt. Tighten the fan firmly with the fluid coupling before putting back the radiator support seal upper. Install the 4 bolts to the engine under cover sub-assy No.1 while torqueing it to 29 Nm (296 kgf-cm, 21 ft. lbs.). Secure the V-bank cover with its 2 nuts torqued to 7.5 Nm (76 kgf-cm, 66 inch lbs.).
