2002 Toyota Tundra Water Pump Parts Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair a Water Pump on 2002 Toyota Tundra?
A: The water pump repair starts by draining engine coolant followed by timing belt and No. 2 idler pulley removal. First disconnect the water bypass hose from the water inlet housing then remove the 2 bolts securing the water inlet housing to the water pump and finally remove the housing from the front water bypass joint after which the water inlet and inlet housing assembly with its O-ring can be taken out. The water pump removal process starts by taking out 5 bolts and 2 stud bolts together with a nut and the water pump itself and gasket followed by extracting the O-ring from the water bypass pipe. The inspection of the water pump includes both air hole and water hole leak tests. Water pump replacement will be needed if leaks are discovered during inspections along with timing belt replacement. Check water pump bearing motion while rotating the pulley before replacing the water pump unit when necessary. To maintain the fluid coupling you need to remove its four nuts and fan afterward inspect for damage along with silicon oil leaks and finally install the fan with 4 nuts while applying 5.4 Nm (55 kgf-cm, 47 inch lbs.) torque. Check the fan pulley bracket for smooth operation while examining all timing belt components of the engine. Install the water bypass pipe using a new O-ring, then apply soapy water to the O-ring and finally join the water pump to the pipe for installation using a new gasket secured with 5 bolts, 2 stud bolts and a nut. Tighten all fasteners uniformly until they reach 21 Nm (215 kgf-cm, 15 ft. lbs.) for the bolts and 18 Nm (185 kgf-cm, 13 ft. lbs.) for the stud bolts and nuts. After removing all FIPG packing material from the gasket surfaces and sealing groove it is necessary to clean all components before applying substitute seal packing (Part No. 08826-00100 or equivalent) to the water inlet housing's sealing groove during a time period not exceeding five minutes. Use a new O-ring for the water inlet housing; apply soapy water to the O-ring and join the housing to the front water bypass joint hole while fixing it with two bolts torqued to 18 Nm (185 kgf-cm, 13 ft. lbs.). You must reconnect the water bypass hose to the water inlet housing and also put back the timing belt as well the No. 2 idler pulley. Engine coolant addition needs to be followed by engine startup along with a leak-check followed by engine coolant level check.
