2002 Toyota Tundra Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to Service and Repair a Water Pump on 2002 Toyota Tundra?
A: Service and repair of the water pump begin by removing the oil dipstick and guide which requires bolt extraction and removal of the O-ring. The first step requires the removal of the timing belt while also removing the water inlet and thermostat. Water pump owners requiring oil cooler service must disconnect the hose at the point where it attaches to the water pump. To detach the water pump you must remove its 7 bolts. Visual inspection of the air hole and water hole should be performed for coolant leakage. Water pump replacement is necessary when leakage occurs while timing belt replacement is needed after coolant touches the belt. Pulley rotation must be done to verify free movement and silence of the water pump bearing which warrants new pump installation. After removing all 4 nuts and the fan correctly inspect for damage together with silicon oil leakages before reinstalling the fan while torquing the 4 nuts to 5.4 Nm (55 kgf-cm, 47 inch lbs.). Observe the smooth operation of the fan pulley bracket and test the condition of timing belt components. The installer needs to eliminate old packing material (FIPG) from water pump and cylinder block areas through razor blade and gasket scraper cleaning before starting the installation process. Seal packing (Part No. 08826-00100 or equivalent) requires a nozzle with a 2 - 3 mm (0.08 - 0.12 inch) opening for application to the water pump grooves and must be done within 5 minutes before part assembly. First install the water pump using its seven bolts at 20 Nm torque before adding the thermostat and water inlet. The process for connecting an oil hose with the cooler involves mounting it to the water pump before installing the timing belt. The oil dipstick guide requires the installation of an entirely new O-ring before application of soapy water to its surface. Afterward, place the oil dipstick guide into the guide hole of the oil pump and fasten it against the generator bracket using a bolt, tightened to 8 Nm (80 kgf-cm, 70 inch lbs.).
