2003 Toyota Tundra Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to service and repair the water pump on 2003 Toyota Tundra?
A: Begin service and repair of the water pump after removing the oil dipstick guide through removing its bolt and O-ring. It begins with timing belt removal until you need to remove the water inlet and thermostat. Disconnection of the oil cooler hose from the water pump is necessary before unbolting the 7 bolts that secure the pump unit. Inspection of the water pump should include checking for coolant leaks at its air and water holes; replacement of the water pump and timing belt is required if leaks occur on either component. Test the water pump bearing by rotating the pulley because uneven sound with rough movement indicates replacement of the water pump. Before reinstalling the fan with its 4 nuts torque it to 5.4 Nm (55 kgf-cm, 47 inch lbs.) after verifying that the coupling has no damage and silicon oil leaks. Check whether the fan pulley bracket can smoothly turn before replacing it while examining all timing belt components. During installation use a razor blade followed by a gasket scraper to remove all old FIPG packing from the water pump as well as the cylinder block. Then clean both surfaces with a non-residue solvent. Use a nozzle cut to 2 - 3 mm (0.08 - 0.12 inch) opening to apply seal packing (Part No. 08820-00100 or equivalent) to water pump grooves and do this work within 5 minutes before assembling components. With 7 bolts the water pump receives a torque of 20 Nm (200 kgf-cm, 14 ft. lbs.). Then install the thermostat and water inlet, connect the oil cooler hose if necessary before deploying the timing belt and reinstating the oil dipstick and guide which should utilize a new O-ring alongside an O-ring lubrication using soapy water before insertion into the guide hole and ultimate attachment to the generator bracket by bolt torque to 8 Nm (80 kgf-cm, 70 inch lbs.).
