2002 Toyota Tacoma Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to Properly Replace a Brake Pad Set on 2002 Toyota Tacoma?
A: You should check the pad lining thickness through the caliper inspection hole before pad replacement because new pads are needed if the measurement shows less than 1.0 mm (0.039 inch). The caliper needs lifting by removing its bottom slide pin then suspending it in place above the wheel without disconnection the flexible hose. The replacement process requires removal of brake pads together with four anti-squeal shims, the pad wear indicator plate and the four pad support plates. Support plates should be used again if they remain intact and clean and free of deformation or cracks. Check the disc thickness and look for runout damage before adding the four pad support plates. When replacing pads, users must install new anti-squeal shims and wear indicator plates with the pads while securely placing the pad wear indicator plate to the inner pad and applying disc brake grease on both sides of the inner shims before attaching two shims to each pad. The pad installation sequence begins with placing the inner pad which has the wear indicator plate situated downward and then adding the outer pad while maintaining the front surface clear of lubricant and grease. To begin pad installation start by removing a little brake fluid from the reservoir then use a hammer handle and similar tool to push in the piston until it becomes easy; in case of resistance loosen the bleeder plug to let fluid drain while performing piston pushing. Put the brake caliper into position with attention to avoid boot wedging and tighten the slide pin to 88 Nm along with 900 kgf-cm torque (65 ft. lbs.). Install the front wheel before torquing it to 103 Nm (1,050 kgf-cm, 76 ft. lbs.) while pressing the brake pedal several times to verify the fluid reaches the max line.
