2002 Toyota Sequoia Power Steering Pump Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to service and repair the power steering pump on 2002 Toyota Sequoia?
A: Service and repair of the power steering pump begins with a PS vane pump rotating torque measurement followed by a test for smooth operation without strange noises and ending with a torque wrench check for less than 0.28 Nm (2.8 kgf-cm, 2.4 inch lbs.) rotational torque. Start by disconnecting the suction port union by removing both its bolt and O-ring before proceeding to separate the pressure port union along with the flow control valve and spring while also easing out the O-ring from the pressure port union. Unlock the rear housing through the removal of 4 bolts but gently strike the housing with a plastic hammer for stuck wave washers and side plate. Proceed by taking out the wave washer together with the side plate and gasket and cam ring and 10 vane plates and vane pump rotor making certain all plates stay intact. Remove the vane pump shaft combined with vane pump pulley and 2 straight pins from the front housing. Standard and maximum oil clearance between the vane pump shaft and bushing should be measured with a micrometer and caliper gauge to ensure 0.03 - 0.05 mm (0.0012 - 0.0020 inch) for standard and 0.07 mm (0.0028 inch) for maximum clearance. Other conditions apply. The inspection of vane pump rotor and vane plates requires measurements to confirm a minimum height of 8.6 mm (0.339 inch), thickness at 1.397 mm (0.0550 inch), and length as 14.991 mm (0.5902 inch). The maximum acceptable clearance between rotor groove and plate should be no greater than 0.033 mm (0.0013 inch) according to feeler gauge measurements. Replace components when necessary. Check the flow control valve by carrying out two inspections. Firstly test its free drop into the valve hole using power steering fluid while validating a smooth movement. Secondly test for leakages by applying compressed air at 392 to 490 kPa (4 to 5 kgf/cm2 or 57 to 71 psi) to examine if compressed air escapes from the end holes, replace the valve if needed with one that has the same inscribed mark: A, B, C, D, E, or F. Measure the spring free length using vernier calipers to meet a minimum standard of 33.2 mm (1.307 Use Special Service Tool: 09950-60010 (09951-00330), 09950-70010 (09951-07100) to correctly press in a new seal while ensuring the proper direction after wrapping the screwdriver tip with vinyl tape and coating the new oil seal lip with power steering fluid. Apply power steering fluid to specified components and mount the van pump shaft together with the vane pump pulley before inserting two new straight pins with a plastic hammer. Position the cam ring facing toward the outside and place the vane pump rotor afterward with its inscribed mark visible to the exterior before installing a new snap ring. When installing the vane plates on the front housing face down the rounded sections to the exterior while applying the new gasket correctly. The side plate should match the holes and straight pins before installing the wave washer with its protrusions entering the slots in the side plate. Apply power steering fluid to two fresh O-rings before placing them at the rear housing and fastening it with four bolts to 24 Nm torque specification (240 kgf-cm, 17 ft. lbs.). Install the spring then the flow control valve followed by the pressure port union while ensuring proper valve direction and applying power steering fluid to the new O-ring before tightening the pressure port union to 83 Nm (850 kgf-cm, 61 ft. lbs.). Place a fresh O-ring into power steering fluid before installing it to the suction port union with the bolt while torquing to 13 Nm (130 kgf-cm, 9 ft. lbs.). Then repeat the PS vane pump rotating torque measurement.
