2002 Toyota Land Cruiser Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the water pump on 2002 Toyota Land Cruiser?
A: Engine professionals should begin water pump maintenance by draining coolant followed by timing belt uninstallation and finally removing the No.2 idler pulley. The service requires disconnecting the water bypass hose from the water inlet housing followed by unbolting the housing from its 2 mounting points to the water pump and finally disconnecting the housing from the front water bypass joint enabling removal of the water inlet assembly and its O-ring from the water inlet housing. The procedure calls for water pump extraction which requires you to first loosen all 5 bolts and 2 stud bolts and a nut followed by removing the water pump and its gasket and satisfyingly detaching the O-ring from the water bypass pipe. To detect water pump coolant leakage inspect both the air hole and water hole of the unit. Replacement of the water pump and timing belt becomes necessary when coolant leakage occurs. You should perform pulley rotation to verify smooth and quiet water pump bearing movement before replacing the water pump. Begin the installation by putting an O-ring on the water bypass pipe end before applying soapy water to the O-ring and mating the water pump to this end. Use the water pump and new gasket with 5 bolts and 2 stud bolts along with a nut to tighten them equitably through multiple passages using 21 Nm for bolts and 18 Nm for stud bolts and nuts and 35 mm long bolts. After cleaning both surfaces of water pump and water inlet housing completely the technician applies seal packing (Part No. 08826-00100 or equivalent) to the water inlet housing sealing groove but must finish assembly within five minutes. Fasten the replacement water inlet housing O-ring with soapy water and connect the inlet housing end to the front water bypass joint hole before attaching the assembly using 2 bolts which should be tightened alternately to 18 Nm torque. The last steps include installing the No.2 idler pulley along with the timing belt and filling with engine coolant followed by start-up to verify coolant leaks while additionally inspecting the coolant level.
