2001 Toyota Land Cruiser Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the water pump on 2001 Toyota Land Cruiser?
A: The water pump service process requires starting with coolant drain then timing belt removal and ending with the removal of the No.2 idler pulley. Open the water bypass hose on the water inlet housing while you take out the 2 bolts securing the water inlet housing to the water pump and disconnect the housing from its front water bypass connection. Pull out the water inlet assembly with inlet housing and keep both the O-ring from the water inlet housing. First remove the water pump by uninstalling the five bolts and two stud bolts as well as the nut and water pump and gasket and take out the O-ring from the water bypass pipe. Perform a leak check of the water pump through air hole and water hole inspection to determine if replacement of the water pump and timing belt is necessary. The pulley's rotation should check the smooth functioning of water pump bearings while you need to replace the water pump if needed. The next step requires examining all timing belt parts before starting with installation. The installation of the water pump begins with applying soapy water to the O-ring on the water bypass pipe end followed by joining the water pump to this end. Next install the water pump with a new gasket using 5 bolts, 2 stud bolts and one nut. Tighten all bolts in multiple passes to achieve the specified torque of 21 Nm (215 kgf-cm, 15 ft. lbs.) for the bolts and 18 Nm (185 kgf-cm, 13 ft. lbs.) for the stud bolts and nut in succession. The bolts should be 35 mm (1.38 inch) The water inlet and inlet housing assembly requires stripping off old packing materials (FIPG) with attention to avoid surface contamination from oil during the process of complete parts cleaning. Seal Paking (Part No. 08826-00100 or equivalent) must be applied to the water inlet housing sealing groove though a 2 - 3 mm diameter (0.08 - 0.12 inch) nozzle opening before assembly takes place within five minutes. First install a new O-ring to the water inlet housing before applying soapy water to it. Then attach the water inlet housing end to the front water bypass joint hole and secure the assembly with the 2 bolts which should be alternated while tightening to reach 18 Nm (185 kgf-cm, 13 ft. lbs.) torque. The two bolt lengths used in this operation measure at 76 mm (3.00 inch) for bolt A followed by 22 mm (0.87 inch) for bolt B. As the last step you must install the No.2 idler pulley and timing belt, proceed to fill the engine with coolant before beginning the engine and checking for coolant leaks and rechecking the engine coolant level.
