2002 Toyota Land Cruiser Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair a thermostat on 2002 Toyota Land Cruiser?
A: Starting repair and servicing of the thermostat requires the engine coolant to be drained first. You can disconnect the water inlet from the water inlet housing through the removal of three nuts. Afterward remove the thermostat together with its gasket. The inspection process requires you to heat water while testing the thermostat in its bath to verify the valve opening ranges from 80 - 84 degrees Celsius (176 - 183 degrees Fahrenheit); otherwise replace the thermostat. The thermostat should receive replacement if its valve lift fails to meet 10 mm (0.39 inch) at 95 degrees Celsius (203 degrees Fahrenheit). You should replace the thermostat because it does not close completely when exposed to temperatures below 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit). To install the new gasket place the thermostat in the water inlet housing with its jiggle valve facing directly upward when it lies between 30 degrees positions from the recommended orientation. Fasten the water inlet into position using 3 nuts that should be tightened to 19 Nm (195 kgf-cm, 14 ft. lbs.). Result in adding engine coolant followed by engine start up and subsequent leak inspection before reviewing engine coolant level.
