2002 Toyota Land Cruiser Power Steering Pump Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to service and repair the power steering pump on 2002 Toyota Land Cruiser?
A: Start power steering pump service by measuring PS vane pump rotating torque which should operate without noise at a maximum level of 0.28 Nm (2.8 kgf-cm, 2.4 inch lbs.). Use Specially Designed Tool 09960-10010 (09962-01000, 09963-01000) to block the pulley rotation before uninstalling its nut and pulley. Remove the suction port union while extracting its bolt and O-ring then proceed to the removal of pressure port union and flow control valve and spring keeping the pressure union O-ring intact. The rear housing disconnects via bolt removal of four pieces; a gentle plastic hammer strike on the rear housing segment if wave washers and side plates get stuck. Carefully remove the 2 O-rings from the rear housing followed by the wave washer and side plate and gasket and cam ring and 10 vane plates and vane pump rotor keeping the plates from damage. The vane pump shaft and its accompanying 2 straight pins should be removed from the front housing. A standard measurement of 0.03 - 0.05 mm but a maximum of 0.07 mm (0.0012 - 0.0020 inch) should exist between the vane pump shaft and bushing. You should replace the shaft and front housing if these limits are exceeded. The height, thickness, and length measurement of the vane pump rotor and plates should equal or exceed 8.6 mm (0.339 inch) and 1.397 mm (0.0550 inch) and 14.991 mm (0.5902 inch). Use a feeler gauge to check the rotor groove and plate clearance while verifying maximum clearance must be 0.033 mm (0.0013 inch); replace any plate or rotor that exceeds this specification. Check the flow control valve by coating it with power steering fluid and ensuring it falls smoothly into the valve hole; also check for leakage by applying compressed air 392 - 490 kPa (4 - 5 kgf/cm2, 57 - 71 psi) and confirming no air escapes from the end holes, replacing the valve if necessary with one that has the same inscribed mark: A, B, C, D, E, or F. Measure the free length of the spring with vernier calipers, ensuring it is at least 33.2 mm (1.307 inch); replace if it does not meet this specification. To replace the oil seal a screwdriver with vinyl tape covering the tip can carefully remove it. The new oil seal lip should receive power steering fluid application before insertion through Special Service Tool: 09950-60010 (09951-00330), 09950-70010 (09951-07100) while carefully maintaining the right orientation. To assemble the component apply power steering fluid on specific parts while you insert the vane pump shaft followed by striking two new straight pins with a plastic hammer. Start with the cam ring which has the inscribed mark in front position then install the vane pump rotor with its inscribed mark also facing outward before putting on a new snap ring. Affix the 10 vane plates to the front housing by putting their rounded edges facing outwards while implementing a new gasket that should be installed properly. Synchronize the side plate holes with the 2 straight pins and put in place the wave washer so its protrusions fill the side plate slots before fastening the rear housing with 2 newly coated power steering fluid O-rings while securing it with 4 bolts at 24 Nm (240 kgf-cm, 17 ft. lbs.). The repair requires the installation of the spring and flow control valve and pressure port union while maintaining correct direction orientation and applying power steering fluid to the new O-ring before installation. These components need to be tightened to 83 Nm (850 kgf-cm, 61 ft. lbs.). The suction port union requires installation using a bolt torqued to 13 Nm (130 kgf-cm, 9 ft. lbs.) after adhering its new O-ring with power steering fluid. Use Special Service Tool: 09960-10010 (09962-01000, 09963-01000) to prevent pulley rotation before applying torque to the new pulley set nut at 43 Nm (440 kgf-cm, 32 ft. lbs.). After installation, measure the PS vane pump rotating torque once more.
