2002 Toyota Land Cruiser Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How do you remove the coil spring and inspect the shock absorber on 2002 Toyota Land Cruiser?
A: First step to remove the coil spring involves wheel removal while using torque settings at 131 Nm corresponding to (1,340 kgf-cm, 97 ft. lbs.). Begin by placing a jack under the rear axle housing before removing the shock absorber by unbolt it from the housing segments while applying 98 Nm (1,000 kgf-cm, 72 ft. lbs.). Remove the nut first using the piston rod grip before obtaining the 2 retainers along with cushion and shock absorber by applying 69 Nm (704 kgf-cm, 51 ft. lbs.) torque. The shock absorber will then require removal of its retainers and cushion. Release the LH and RH stabilizer bar bracket by unbolting four pieces with 18 Nm (185 kgf-cm, 13 ft. lbs.) then remove the lateral control rod by detaching its nut along with washer and bolt having 150 Nm (1,530 kgf-cm, 111 ft. lbs.) torque but only tighten the nut and bolt after stabilizing the suspension during installation. First disconnect the breather hose before starting axle housing descent to prevent brake line and parking brake cable damage and extract both coil spring and insulator. It is necessary to verify that the coil spring end has been correctly installed during reinstallation; reinstall it if it is not properly aligned. The bolt and frame-following spring need a torque of 28 Nm when removing them (290 kgf-cm or 21 ft. lbs.). A proper shock absorber inspection requires testing the rod through compression and extension movements to identify resistance abnormalities and strange noises so you should replace it when these signs appear. To properly dispose of the shock absorber make a hole 2 - 3 millimeters (0.079 - 0.118 inches) wide through which you can drain the inside gas while being cautious about flying debris and keeping in mind that the gas has no smell, color, or toxicity. The installation and removal of the bushing requires Special Service Tools: 09710-14013 (09710-00061), 09710-28012 (09710-07031), 09950-70010 (09951-07100) alongside a press as per the order shown in the figure.
