2002 Toyota Highlander Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How Should You Properly Dispose of a Side Air Bag Assembly on 2002 Toyota Highlander?
A: Before discarding a side Air Bag assembly make sure to deploy it according to procedure while contacting the SERVICE DEPT. of TOYOTA MOTOR SALES, U.S.A., INC. in case of abnormal deployment conditions. Discard an undeployed Air Bag assembly only outside your workspace because a loud explosion noise will occur during disposal. You must follow the recommended deployment procedure. The SRS Air Bag Deployment Tool (Special Service Tools 09082-00700 and 09082-00750) must be used to deploy the Air Bag minimum 10 m (33 ft) from its assembly and the Air Bag needs to cool down for 30 minutes post-deployment. The deployment of Air Bag assemblies requires wearing protective gloves and safety glasses before handling while complete hand washing should take place afterward. The deployment process requires removing two nuts from the side Air Bag assembly before positioning it with upward-facing deployment side during storage. The assembly needs a service-purpose wire harness with minimum 1.25 sq.mm stripped wire section for deployment safety. Place the assembly inside a tire while facing the deployment side inward of an area that includes tires with minimum dimensions of width 185 mm (7.28 in.) and inner diameter 360 mm (14.17 in.). Use two tight wire harnesses to fix at least two tires above and below the assembly-containing tire. To prevent side Air Bag assembly connector damage do not engage the secondary lock mechanism on the Special Service Tool before attachment to the connector. Activate the Air Bag deployment through a safety process in which you will attach the red connector to the positive battery terminal while the black clip connects to the negative terminal but only when all crew members maintain at least 10 meters (33 feet) of distance from the deployment area. Then activate the button. The assembly needs to cool down after deployment while you remove it from the tire and place it in a vinyl bag for proper disposal as general parts.
