2002 Toyota Echo Shock Absorber Parts Q&A
Q: How to service and repair the Shock Absorber on 2002 Toyota Echo?
A: Service and repair of the suspension strut requires coil spring disassembly that starts by securing the shock absorber into a vise using 2 nuts and a bolt while using Special Service Tool 09727-30021 (09727-00010, 09727-00021, 09727-00031) to compress the coil spring but never using an impact wrench to protect the tool. Secure the suspension support with 2 nuts and a screwdriver by placing them on its center nut for safe removal of the supporting stud bolts in the suspension support. The installation requires removal of the suspension support followed by the dust seal and then the spring upper seat and upper insulator and spring bumper and finally the coil spring. To inspect the shock absorber rod users should first extend then compress it for evaluating any unusual noises or resistance; if problems are detected users should exchange the shock absorber unit. To dispose of a shock absorber extend its rod completely before drilling a hole into the cylinder while taking precautions against flying metal fragments and understanding the cylinder gas is non-toxic and lacking color or odor. Reassembly requires users to place the spring bumper onto the piston rod before using Special Service Tool: 09727-30021 (09727-00010, 09727-00021, 09727-00031) to compress the coil spring which should then be positioned into the spring lower seat's gap. You should position the upper insulator with the "triangle" mark at the outermost part of the assembly and place the spring upper seat which notes "OUT" facing outward next. Install the dust seal followed by the suspension support then secure the new center nut using a screwdriver tightened to 33 Nm while ensuring stud bolt safety of the suspension support. Install the Special Service Tool: 09727-30021 (09727-00010, 09727-00021, 09727-00031) while applying MP grease to the suspension support before installing its cap.
