2002 Toyota Corolla Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to remove and install the side Air Bag sensor assembly on 2002 Toyota Corolla?
A: You need to follow this sequence for side Air Bag sensor assembly removal: First remove the front door scuff plate along with center pillar lower garnish, afterward disconnect pretensioner connector of the front seat outer belt retractor, then (for LH side only) disconnect retractor switch connector and afterwards remove two bolts with retractor. The side Air Bag sensor needs its connector separated while the sensor remains installed in position then you must use a T40 torx wrench (Part No. 09042 - 0020 or locally manufactured tool) to remove the four screws that hold the side Air Bag sensor in place. When installing the sensor assembly, users must connect its connector while it is attached and check torque specifications for proper installation and examine it for damage. If the sensor assembly shows signs of dropping or has defects, use a new part as replacement. Keep the side Air Bag assembly in place by using a T40 torx wrench then set the screw torque to 20 N.m (205 kgf.cm, 15 ft.lbf). You should now attach the front seat outer belt retractor using two bolts while torquing the upper bolt to 4.9 N.m (50 kgf.cm, 43 in.lbf) and the lower bolt to 41 N.m (420 kgf.cm, 30 ft.lbf) and then reinstall the retractor switch connector for the LH side only followed by connecting the pretensioner connector. The installation order requires the front door scuff plate along with the center pillar lower garnish.
