2002 Toyota Celica Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the water pump on 2002 Toyota Celica?
A: Service and repair of the water pump requires engine under cover removal then engine coolant drain together with drive belt removal. You must remove all 6 bolts from the 1ZZ-FE water pump before separating it with the O-ring while cleaning the water chamber room free of engine coolant. The repair of the 2ZZ-GE water pump requires Special Service Tool: 09960-10010 (09962-01000, 09963-00600) to remove its 4 pulley set bolts before installing the water pump pulley followed by the 6 bolts, the water pump, and the O-ring removal. Next, clean out engine coolant from the water chamber room. The water pump needs to be replaced without removing its mount bracket and generator unit from the RH side of the engine. A visual inspection should be performed on the water pump drain hole while searching for coolant leakage because replacement of the water pump is necessary when leakage occurs. The pulley needs to be turned to evaluate the water pump bearing's smooth operation; a replacement water pump should be installed if smooth operation is not achieved. When installing the water pump on a 1ZZ-FE engine begin by installing a newly provided O-ring onto the timing chain cover before securing the six bolts in place while tightening Bolt A to 9.0 Nm (92 kgf-cm, 80 inch lbs.) and Bolt B to 11 Nm (113 kgf-cm, 8 ft. lbs.). Remember that Bolt A measures 30 mm (1.18 inch) and Bolt B measures 35 mm (1.38 inch). To install the water pump on the 2ZZ-GE engine you must first apply a new O-ring to the timing chain cover and then install the water pump with its 6 bolts while torquing them to 9.0 Nm (92 kgf-cm, 80 inch lbs.). After that you must install the water pump pulley and use Special Service Tool: 09960-10010 (09962-01000, 09963-00600) to tighten the 4 water pump pulley set bolts to 15 Nm (153 kgf-cm, 11 ft. lbs.). To complete the task reinstall the RH engine under cover and install the drive belt before filling the system with engine coolant and starting the engine to detect any leaks and verifying the engine coolant level.
