2002 Toyota Avalon Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the water pump on 2002 Toyota Avalon?
A: The approach to service and repair the water pump starts with draining the engine coolant followed by timing belt removal and camshaft timing pulley removal and No. 2 idler pulley removal and No. 3 timing belt cover removal. The water pump can then be taken out through the removal of 4 bolts and 2 nuts and a gasket. The water pump inspection requires checking for coolant leakage through its drain hole before deciding to replace the water pump. The bearing operation of the water pump must be smooth and quiet through pulley rotation which requires a new pump if necessary. The inspection of all timing belt components is necessary. Put the new gasket and water pump into position and fasten it with 4 bolts along with 2 nuts while applying 8 Nm (80 kgf-cm, 69 inch lbs.) torque and avoid any oil from getting on the gasket. The installation process requires fitting of the No. 3 timing belt cover and No. 2 idler pulley and camshaft timing pulleys followed by timing belt installation. Check engine oil level after pouring engine coolant into the system and beginning engine operation and examining for leakages while also double-checking engine coolant amount.
