2001 Toyota Avalon Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair a water pump on 2001 Toyota Avalon?
A: The service and repair of a water pump requires draining engine coolant initially and then removing the timing belt followed by camshaft timing pulleys and No.2 idler pulley before taking out the pump by removing the 4 bolts along with the 2 nuts and the gasket. The inspection of the water pump involves checking the drain hole for coolant leakage. You should replace the water pump if any leakage is detected. The pulley turning procedure helps to check smooth and quiet water pump bearing operation so replace the water pump when necessary. The installation process requires new gasket and water pump installation with 4 bolts and 2 nuts as the gasket torque should stay at 8 Nm (80 kgf-cm, 69 inch lbs.) while gasket surfaces must remain oil-free. Installation of the timing belt cover follows the idler pulley and two camshaft timing pulleys leading to the timing belt attachment. Engine coolant should be added to the system before starting the engine to search for leaks followed by another engine coolant level check.
