2002 Toyota Avalon Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the thermostat on 2002 Toyota Avalon?
A: The first step to service or repair the thermostat starts with coolant drainage followed by V-bank cover removal through the use of a 5 mm hexagon wrench to remove its 3 cap nuts concurrently while also counterclockwise operation of the cover fastener. Start with engine heating to normal working temperature before extracting the air cleaner hose with resonator and disconnecting heater hoses and removing the No. 2 ECT switch connector. Start by disconnecting the engine wire protector from its positions at the water inlet and right-hand cylinder head through clamp removal and nut removal. The water inlet pipe must be disconnected from the water inlet and left-hand cylinder head after removing the bolt and O-ring. The water inlet and thermostat require removal by firstly removing 3 nuts and the attached gasket. Dip the thermostat in water while heating it until you verify that its opening valve operates at 80 - 84 degrees Celsius (176 - 183 degrees Fahrenheit) with a minimum lift measurement of 10.0 mm (0.394 inch) at 95 degrees Celsius (203 degrees Fahrenheit). The valve must reach a complete closure during conditions below 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit) and you should replace the thermostat if any specifications are not achieved. To install the thermostat first place it in the water pump between a fresh gasket while positioning the jiggle valve directly under the upper stud bolt. Obtain a new O-ring for the water inlet pipe before applying soapy water to it. Then connect the pipe to the water inlet and install the left-hand cylinder head bolt with a torque of 19.5 Nm (200 kgf-cm, 14 ft. lbs.). The installation process involves replacing the engine wire protector then connecting the No.2 ECT switch connector followed by heater hose attachment after reinstalling the air cleaner hose accompanied by its resonator followed by the V-bank cover installation with three cap nuts and cover fastener press-down. After adding engine coolant to the system begin engine operation for leak inspection followed by engine coolant level verification in the radiator.
