2002 Toyota Avalon Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the radiator on 2002 Toyota Avalon?
A: A radiator service and repair procedure starts with leak inspections of coolant and A/T fluid and a check of the current A/T fluid level. The service starts with removing the battery tray along with the engine under cover. Start radiator service and repair by removing the No. 3 engine room relay block together with the No. 1 cooling fan connector and the wire clamps from the No. 1 and No. 2 fan shrouds alongside the No. 2 cooling fan connector and the No. 1 ECT switch wire connector. Next, remove the radiator hoses connecting the upper and lower side as well as the A/T oil cooler hoses from the radiator. First detach and lift out the assembly after removing the radiator and cooling fans while unbolt the 2 bolts and 2 upper supports with a torque of 12.8 Nm (130 kgf-cm, 9 ft. lbs.). Two bolts are installed on both the No. 1 ECT switch and cooling fans that need a torque of 5.0 Nm (50 kgf-cm, 44 inch lbs.) to secure them. To disassemble the radiator first remove its cushion and use Special Service Tool: 09230-01010 to adjust the stopper bolt until dimension "B" has a measurement range of 0.2 - 0.5 mm (0.008 - 0.020 inch). The same tool can be used to uncaulk the lock plates while the bracket and O-rings should be removed by gentle bracket tapping. To remove the oil cooler from the lower tank one must disconnect the pipe while unscrewing the nuts along with the plate washers before extracting the oil cooler and O-rings. New O-rings need to be installed to the oil cooler before plate washers and nuts secure the cooler to the lower tank with a torque setting of 8.3 Nm (85 kgf-cm, 74 inch lbs.) followed by the pipe needing 14.7 Nm (150 kgf-cm, 11 ft. lbs.) torque. Middle scan both damage in the lock plate region. Remove any plate warping when repairing the assembly for proper rebuild. Technical procedures demand proper installation of new O-rings and tanks while carefully checking for outside objects and tapping the lock plate to avoid gaps. Special Service Tools 09230-01010 and 09231-14010 need to be assembled to adjust the stopper bolt to reach dimension "B" of 8.4 mm (0.34 inch). Press the tool on the lock plate and avoid staking the areas near pipes or brackets before verifying the lock plate height reaches between 7.4 and 7.8 mm (0.2959 to 0.3119 inch). Place the cushion before finishing the installation process by undoing the removal sequence.
