2002 Toyota Avalon Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove and install the timing belt on 2002 Toyota Avalon?
A: The timing belt removal process begins with freeing the RH front wheel and RH fender apron seal and generator drive belt and PS pump drive belt through loosening their 2 bolts. The ground strap connectors along with the engine coolant reservoir hose need disconnecting from the water outlet. Start by disconnecting the engine moving control rod as well as the No. 2 RH engine mounting bracket before proceeding to the No. 2 generator bracket by unlatching the generator pivot bolt and detaching the bracket and nut. Start by removing the crankshaft pulley with Special Service Tool: 09213-54015 (91651-60855), 09330-00021 to detach the pulley bolt followed by Special Service Tool: 09950-50013 (09951-05010, 09952-05010, 09953-05010, 09953-05020, 09954-05021) to uninstall the pulley. Start by removing the 4 bolts from the No. 1 timing belt cover before moving onto the timing belt guide and the 5 bolts from the No. 2 timing belt cover when the engine wire protector clamps are detached. You need to detach the RH engine mounting bracket through bolt removal and nut unfastening alongside two bracket bolt removal. Work on the No. 1 cylinder at TDC/compression stance by installing the crankshaft pulley bolt temporarily while rotating the crankshaft to match the timing marks before checking the camshaft timing pulleys and the No. 3 timing belt cover alignment. Check the timing belt for its 3 installation marks and front mark before removal; place fresh marks when those present marks are absent. The timing belt tensioner needs removal when you alternately loosen the 2 bolts followed by loosening the timing belt itself. The replacement of camshaft timing pulleys requires the use of Special Service Tools 09249-63010, 09960-10010 (09962-01000, 09963-01000) for the RH pulley along with Special Service Tools 09960-10010 (09962-01000, 09963-01000) for the LH pulley. Use a 10 mm hexagon wrench to detach the No. 2 idler pulley and then the No. 1 idler pulley. Use Special Service Tool: 09950-50012 (09951-05010, 09952-05010, 09953-05010, 09953-05020, 09950-05011) to remove the crankshaft timing pulley through the bolt removal and timing belt plate removal while maintaining the sensor part free from scratches during the procedure. Check the timing belt for defects while confirming that it stays straight, avoids twisting or touching oil, water or steam and determines if it retains its proper installation and wear condition. Check both idler pulleys for oil leakage and inspect the operation of the components while testing the timing belt tensioner for oil leakage and appropriate push rod movement. Install the crankshaft timing pulley after aligning the pulley set key and sliding it on before adding the timing belt plate together with its bolt. Install the No. 1 idler pulley after applying adhesive Part No. 08833-00080, THREE BOND 1344, LOCTITE 242 or equivalent while verifying the smooth movement of the pulley bracket. Verify the function of the No. 2 idler pulley after its installation. Install both the RH and LH camshaft timing pulleys with their flange sides directed opposite of each other using the correct Special Service Tools. Use the timing marks to align the No. 1 cylinder toward its TDC/compression position. Begin timing belt installation when the engine temperature is low with clean pulleys and align every timing mark on the belt to the indicated timing marks on the pulleys following their specified order. Begin with the timing belt tensioner setup by applying the push rod and fastening it with a hexagon wrench before attaching the tensioner followed by bolt tightening. During valve timing inspection check the crankshaft positioning while verifying that timing marks match; a proper alignment will confirm the timing belt installation. Secure all gaskets properly as you install the RH engine mounting bracket and the sequence of components starting with No. 2 timing belt cover and timing belt guide and ending with crankshaft pulley. The next steps include installing the No. 2 generator bracket together with the No. 2 RH engine mounting bracket, the engine moving control rod, ground strap connectors and the engine coolant reservoir hose as well as the PS pump drive belt, generator drive belt, and RH fender apron seal with the RH front wheel before conducting a road test to evaluate noise levels, movement and shifts.
