2002 Toyota Avalon Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to replace the front Brake Pad Set on 2002 Toyota Avalon?
A: The pad lining thickness should be tested through the caliper inspection hole after removing the front wheel to verify 1.0 mm (0.039 inch) thickness. If the pads fail this requirement they should be replaced. Lift the caliper after removing both the bolt and flexible hose attached to the shock absorber bracket followed by the bottom side installation bolt then suspend the caliper securely without interfering with the flexible hose. You will need to remove two brake pads and four anti-squeal shims combined with the pad wear indicator plate together with the two pad support plates. The support plates may be reused if they demonstrate no deformation while remaining free from cracks or wear or rust and dirt contamination. Verify the disc measurement and runout before installing both pad support plates. Install new pad wear indicator plates together with anti-squeal shims at the same time, mount a pad wear indicator plate on the inner pad before you put disc brake grease on both sides of inner anti-squeal shims and place two shims on each pad. Lay position the inner pad so its wear indicator plate faces upward then drop in the outer pad with all friction surfaces clean from oil and grease. The brake fluid reservoir needs a slight draw of liquid followed by piston compression with a hammer handle until the bleeder plug can help with the process. While tightening the caliper bolt which requires 34 Nm (350 kgf-cm, 25 ft. lbs.) torque, keep the sliding pin in place followed by flexible hose fixation with bolt to the shock absorber bracket requiring 29 Nm (300 kgf-cm, 21 ft. lbs.) torque. Install the front wheel with a torque of 103 Nm (1,050 kgf-cm, 76 ft. lbs.), perform several brake pedal depressions, and ensure the fluid rests at the maximum line of the reservoir.
