2001 Toyota Avalon Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to replace the front Brake Pad Set on 2001 Toyota Avalon?
A: You must inspect the pad lining through the caliper inspection hole first before pad replacement because the pad needs change if its thickness falls under 1.0 mm (0.039 inch). Raise the caliper when you detach both the bolt and flexible hose from the shock absorber bracket followed by the bottom side installation bolt then securely position the caliper while keeping the flexible hose connected. The brake pad replacement procedure needs the removal of two brake pads along with four anti-squeal shims and two pad support plates and the pad wear indicator plate. Support plates can be reused if they pass inspection by not showing any damage, cracks, wear, while remaining rust-free and dirt-free. The disc thickness check must be completed before installing both pad support plates. During new pad replacement install the wear indicator plates together with anti-squeal shims at the same time; place the indicator plate on inner pads followed by applying disc brake grease to both sides of the inner shims. Install two shims per pad. Install the pads starting with the inner pad which has the wear indicator plate upward while carefully avoiding friction surfaces from coming into contact with oil or grease. Installation of the caliper requires a small brake fluid drain from the reservoir then pressing the piston with a hammer handle or equivalent tool while unlatching the bleeder plug if required before caliper attachment. Betwixt holding the sliding pin and torquing the installation bolt to 34 Nm (350 kgf-cm, 25 ft. lbs.) reattach the flexible hose and bolt to the shock absorber bracket while torquing it to 29 Nm (300 kgf-cm, 21 ft. lbs.). To complete the installation replace the front wheel while tightening it to 103 Nm (1,050 kgf-cm, 76 ft. lbs.). Then press the brake pedal several times before checking the fluid level reaches the max line.
