    Q:
How to replace the rear Brake Pad Set on Toyota Avalon? Posted by Customer
    A:
Begin by removing the rear wheel to check the pad lining thickness through the caliper inspection hole before pad replacement when the thickness reaches below 1.0 mm (0.039 inch). Secure the caliper in position after uninstalling the bottom side installation bolt and avoiding flexible hose removal. First remove the two brake pads together with their four anti-squeal shims and then proceed to remove the four pad support plates although these can be reused if they demonstrate no deformation wear or cracks and remain rust and dirt-free. Measure the disc thickness followed by checking its runout condition prior to installing the four pad support plates. The pad installation requires using new anti-squeal shims that must be greased on both sides before installing two shims on each pad while keeping the pads' wear indicator plates positioned downward and maintaining friction surfaces free from oil or grease. Use a hammer handle or corresponding tool to press the piston while the reservoir receives a small brake fluid drain. The tool should encounter resistance during this process so loosen the bleeder plug to let fluid escape as you continue inserting the piston. Close the caliper with the installed bolt before tightening it to 34 Nm (350 kgf-cm, 25 ft. lbs.). The final step involves reinstalling the rear wheel followed by torquing it to 103 Nm (1,050 kgf-cm, 76 ft. lbs.). Afterward, users should depress the brake pedal several times and verify that fluid reaches the maximum line.
