2002 Toyota 4Runner Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the power steering pump on 2002 Toyota 4Runner?
A: The power steering pump servicing process starts by taking out 3 bolts which hold the air cleaner assembly in place. You will disconnect the return hose after removing its clip but make sure the drive belt stays safe from leaking fluid. Unscrew the oil pressure switch while removing its connector from the pressure feed tube yet maintain grip on it at all times since a new part will be required in case of damage or drop. Disconnection of the pressure feed tube from the PS vane pump assembly requires removal of the union bolt together with its gasket. Remove the drive belt by successively removing bolt "A" and nut "B" then bolt "C" and the PS vane pump assembly that also contains bolt "A" and nut "B.". The PS vane pump assembly needs mounting first before adjusting bolt "C" to set drive belt tension then torquing bolt "A" and nut "B" to 43 Nm (440 kgf-cm, 32 ft. lbs.). Before setting the pressure feed tube into place, place a new gasket and union bolt on it while making sure the stopper touches the PS vane pump body. Torque the connection to 47 Nm (480 kgf-cm, 35 ft. lbs.). Fit the oil pressure switch onto the pressure feed tube before tightening it to 21 Nm (210 kgf-cm, 15 ft. lbs.). Then wrap the connector around these parts but maintain care to avoid oil contamination. Attach the return hose and apply the clip before returning the air cleaner assembly to position with its 3 bolts. Bleeding of the power steering system needs to be completed as the final step.
