2001 Toyota Tundra Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How Can You Properly Service and Repair a Thermostat on 2001 Toyota Tundra?
A: The cooling system requires draining engine coolant as the first step before servicing the thermostat. The water inlet housing requires its connection to the water inlet removed through the removal of 3 nuts. Start by taking out the thermostat unit while also removing its attached gasket. Benchmark the valve opening temperature of your thermostat by heating water at changing temperatures while observing that it operates within 80 - 84 degrees Celsius (176 - 183 degrees Fahrenheit); otherwise replace the thermostat. The necessary valve lift measurement should be at least 10 mm (0.39 inch) when testing at 95 degrees Celsius (203 degrees Fahrenheit; if this standard is not met you should replace the thermostat. Check the valve for complete closure when the temperature reaches below 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit) because any malfunction requires a new thermostat. Insert a new gasket onto the thermostat before putting the device into the water inlet housing so that its jiggle valve points straight up with a 30 degrees angle tolerance. Install the water inlet with three nuts while tightening them to 19 Nm (195 kgf-cm, 14 ft. lbs.). The system must receive engine coolant followed by engine start to detect leaks while confirming correct coolant levels.
