2001 Toyota Tundra Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to Properly Remove and Install a Radiator on 2001 Toyota Tundra?
A: The first step to remove a radiator includes removing the engine under cover along with draining engine coolant and disconnecting all components from the reservoir hose and upper and lower radiator hoses as well as the A/T oil cooler hoses. The first step involves taking out both clips of the No.2 fan shroud before moving onto the radiator assembly by unbolting its 4 bolts until the last step is removing the 4 bolts from the No.1 fan shroud. To disassemble the radiator begin by removing the 4 fasteners and 2 pipes along with 2 bushings and 2 radiator supports. Then detach both the radiator cap as well as the drain plug. Connect Special Service Tool: 09230-01010 through its claw attachment to the overhaul handle with the stopper bolt positioned to achieve dimension "B" at 0.2 - 0.3 mm (0.008 - 0.012 inch). Free the lock plates from the pressure using the same tool before removing both tanks and O-rings by gently hitting the radiator port with a soft-faced hammer. First check the lock plate condition for any damage before repairing it for successful reassembly. Install fresh O-rings along with tanks without any debris in the lock plate groove then strike the plate with a soft-faced hammer to remove gaps before assembly. Operators must use Special Service Tools: 09230-01010 and 09231-14010 to adjust the stopper bolt which will secure a 8.4 mm (0.34 inch) dimension "B". The lock plate should be pressed against the tool for caulking before verifying it has a height measurement between 7.4 - 7.8 mm (0.2959 - 0.3119 inch). Before install insert a new drain plug O-ring then soak the plug with soapy water before attaching it. Important step: Examine water leaks through the use of Special Service Tool: 09230-01010 to seal the inlet and outlet pipes when test pressure reaches 147 kPa (1.5 kgf/cm2, 21 psi) with a radiator cap tester. Mount the radiator support system by integrating two radiator supports and two bushings and two pipes that need four bolts torqued to 12.7 Nm (130 kgf-cm, 9 ft. lbs.) level then affix the radiator cap. Begin with installing the No.1 fan shroud using 4 bolts tightened to 5 Nm (50 kgf-cm, 44 inch lbs.), then position the radiator bracket hooks to radiator support holes before securing the assembly with 4 bolts tightened to 12 Nm (120 Nm, 9 ft. lbs.). Before ending the installation process you must mount the No.2 fan shroud through its 2 clips and then restore the A/T oil cooler hoses and upper and lower radiator hoses and radiator reservoir hose connections. Check the engine coolant level while the engine starts before inspecting for leaks. Once leaks are verified the coolant level must be rechecked before sealing the engine with its undercover.
