2000 Toyota Tundra Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove and reinstall a radiator on 2000 Toyota Tundra?
A: Starting the radiator removal process requires removal of the engine under cover together with engine coolant drainage and detachment of the reservoir hose and upper radiator hose and lower radiator hose and A/T oil cooler hoses from the radiator (when applicable). Before replacing the radiator you must remove the 2 clips from the No.2 fan shroud followed by the radiator assembly by taking out the 4 bolts. The next step is to remove the No.1 fan shroud through bolt removal of its 4 fasteners. To disassemble the radiator begin by removing 4 bolts and two pipes together with two bushings and two supports and ending with the removal of the radiator cap and drain plug. Use Special Service Tool 09230-01010 by attaching its claw to the overhaul handle. Adjust the stopper bolt to create a space of 0.2 to 0.3 mm (0.008 to 0.012 inch) between components to protect the claw. Use the tool to unstick the lock plates and proceed with removing the tanks and O-rings through soft-faced hammer strikes at the radiator port and then removing the O-ring. The removal of the A/T oil cooler from the lower tank requires separating the 2 inlet pipes, 2 nuts and 2 plate washers until you reach the 2 O-rings from the oil cooler. To reassemble the system first secure the oil cooler inside the lower tank while using safe O-rings which the surfaces should be clean before installation. Next apply 2 new O-rings then attach the oil cooler using two plate washers and two nuts torqued to 8.3 Nm (85 kgf-cm, 74 inch lbs.) and torque the 2 inlet pipes to 15 Nm (150 kgf-cm, 11 ft. lbs.). Evaluate the lock plate condition for improper reassembly purposes and resolve any damage that could lead to tank leakage. Tools and NSN should be used to install two crime-free O-rings before striking the lock plate with a soft-faced hammer to remove gaps. Use assembly tools 09230-01010 and 09231-14010 to adjust the stopper bolt at dimension "B" to 8.4 mm (0.34 inch) before using the tool to apply pressure for the required lock plate height (H) which should be between 7.4 - 7.8 mm (0.2959 - 0.3119 inch). Replace the drain plug O-ring afterward install and secure it with soapy water. A radiator cap tester enables the examination of water leaks through a testing process in which Special Service Tool: 09230-01010 plugs both the inlet and outlet pipes while applying 147 kPa (1.5 kgf/cm2, 21 psi) pressure. The radiator assembly needs 4 bolts that require 12.7 Nm torque (130 kgf-cm, 9 ft. lbs.) to install the radiator supports and bushings along with the pipes. Then install the radiator cap. Install by mounting the No.1 fan shroud with 4 bolts torqued to 5 Nm (50 kgf-cm, 44 inch lbs.) and proceed with the radiator assembly that sets its bracket hooks to the radiator support holes and fastens with 4 bolts torqued to 12 Nm (120 Nm, 9 ft. lbs.). Secure the No.2 fan shroud using 2 clips while connecting AT oil cooler hoses to the radiator before reconnecting both upper and lower radiator hoses alongside the radiator reservoir hose. First add engine coolant before engine start to search for fluid leakage then verify the coolant measurement then mount the engine under cover.
