2001 Toyota Tundra Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the vacuum brake booster on 2001 Toyota Tundra?
A: Service and repairs on the vacuum brake booster begin by removing the master cylinder then disconnecting the vacuum hose followed by removing the scuff plate LH together with cowl side trim LH and lower finish panel and No. 2 heater to register duct. The rigid sequence of repair begins with unfastening the pedal return spring and its clip and clevis pin before proceeding to separate the brake booster using 4 nuts and clevis to extract the brake booster and its accompanying gasket together with two stopper rings and brake booster bracket and its gasket. The first step for installation requires placing a new gasket onto the brake booster followed by installation of the brake booster bracket and 2 stopper rings then placing the booster onto the gasket and adding another new gasket. The installation process requires the attachment of the clevis to the operating rod and the booster installation nuts should be torqued to 13 Nm (130 kgf-cm, 9 ft. lbs.). The clevis pin must be inserted into both the clevis hardware and brake pedal where it can be fastened by the clip while you reattach the vacuum hose to the brake booster. The installation process demands reattachment of the No. 2 heater and register duct followed by cowl side trim LH, lower finish panel, and scuff plate. You can examine the booster push rod length by using Special Service Tool: 09737-00011 on the master cylinder which you should lower until it contacts the piston slightly before flipping the tool over to measure the distance between the booster rod and pin head. Verify this space should measure 0 mm (0 inch). A technician should use Service Tool 09737-00020 to modify booster push rod length until a gentle touch affects the pin head. The last steps include reinstallation of the master cylinder followed by brake fluid addition into the reservoir before bleeding the system while checking for leakage before adjusting the pedal and conducting operational tests.
