2001 Toyota Sequoia Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the starter motor on 2001 Toyota Sequoia?
A: The starter motor service starts with disassembly work that requires removing the nut and disconnecting the lead wire from the magnetic switch terminal with 5.9 Newton meters of torque and then using 9.3 N.m torque to remove through bolts so you can pull out the field frame along with the armature from the magnetic switch assembly while matching the field frame protrusion to the magnetic switch groove for correct reassembly. To reassemble the device change the O-ring on the field frame before installation. The procedure involves first removing two starter housing and clutch assembly screws tightened at 9.3 N.m (95 kgf.cm, 82 in.lbf), subsequent detachment allows the technician to access starter housing, return spring, idler gear, bearing, and starter clutch assembly. The technician should apply grease to the return spring before inserting it into the clutch shaft hole. A magnetic finger helps remove the steel ball from the clutch shaft hole after adding grease to its surface for installation. The brush holder removal procedure begins with the disassembly of two screws which contain O-ring and end cover from the field frame while using 3.8 N.m (39 kgf.cm, 34 in.lbf) torque. The O-ring should be detached before applying a screwdriver to hold the spring in position for brush disconnection. Positive (+) lead wires should remain ungrounded during this process. The reverse order of disassembly guides the reassembly process which requires using high-temperature grease for bearing and gear lubrication. The replacement of rear and front bearings requires Special Service Tool: 09286-46011 together with Special Service Tool: 09820-00030 and a press to correctly install new bearings. Beware of bearing installation direction when working. The magnetic switch terminal kit requires replacement by removing its end cover, three nuts, end cover, gasket, and plunger while maintaining the 3 stud bolts intact to check the contact plate wear before replacing it when the depth reaches 0.9 mm (0.035 in.). Loosen terminal nuts on the plate by applying a wooden block (20 x 33 x 40 mm or 0.79 x 1.30 x 1.57 in.) while using Special Service Tool: 0981-38140 with a hand press. Install new temporary terminal kit parts for both terminals C and 30 by using a press force of 981 N (100 kgf, 221 lbf) and ensure proper contact plate positioning to avoid tipping. Complete the procedure by tightening the nuts with Special Service Tool: 09810-38140 to 17 N.m (170 kgf.cm, 13 ft.lbf), proceeding to clean contact surfaces before reinstalling the magnetic switch end cover along with new gasket and end cover nuts at 3.6 N.m (37 kgf.cm, 32 in.lbf).
