2001 Toyota Sequoia Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the alternator on 2001 Toyota Sequoia?
A: Service and repair of the alternator begins with removing components sequentially including the rear end cover's nut and terminal insulator followed by bolt and three nuts and plate terminal and end cover. The service begins with detachable brush holder operations that include removing the brush holder cover followed by the 2 screws and the brush holder followed by removing the seal plate from the rectifier end frame. Start by taking out the voltage regulator through a screw removal of three screws then proceed to remove the rectifier holder by untwisting its nut and cord clip followed by removing 4 screws and the rectifier holder together with 4 rubber insulators. To work with the pulley apply Special Service Tool 09820-63011 through a torque wrench while turning the socket clockwise until it achieves 39 Nm (400 kgf.cm, 29 ft.lbf) of torque while maintaining the tool in place on the rotor shaft. Secure the adapter in a vise while setting in the socket and attaching the pulley nut which needs to be turned counterclockwise up to half a turn for rotor shaft protection. First remove the generator from the adapter before detaching the socket and pulley holding tool then removing the pulley nut and pulley. You should disconnect the rectifier end frame by removing its three nuts while employing tool 09286-46011 for installation followed by the removal of the generator washer. For reassembly the drive end frame gets mounted onto the pulley and the rotor is installed first and then the rectifier end frame can be added by setting the generator washer onto the rotor and tightening it using a 29 mm socket wrench and three nuts at 4.5 N.m (46 kgf.cm, 39 in.lbf). Attach the pulley to its shaft by first tightening the nut by hand before applying the pulley holding tool for torquing to 39 N.m (398 kg.cm, 29 ft.lb) and finally mounting the adapter to the vise. Before extracting the generator from its adapter it is necessary to tighten the pulley nut to 111 N.m (1,132 kg.cm, 82 ft.lb). The proper direction of the rectifier holder must be verified before installing 4 rubber insulators after which 4 screws secure the rectifier with a force of 2.94 N.m (30 kgf.cm, 26 in.lbf). Then follow the sequence of cord clip installation with proper nut torque at 5.4 N.m (55 kgf.cm, 48 in.lbf), then the sequence continues with seal plate and voltage regulator and brush holder installation using 5 screws torqued to 1.96 N.m (20 kgf.cm, 17 in.lbf). Finally place the brush holder cover on the The end cover and plate terminal require installation onto the bolt while using three nuts tightened to 3.85 N.m (39 kgf.cm) at 34 in.lbf. Keep the rotor smooth when testing rotation. Press out the old front bearing using Special Service Tool 09950-60010 (09951-0260, 09952-6010) and install a new bearing with the same instrument as replacement steps. Fit the bearing retainer using 4 screws at 3.0 N.m (31 kgf.cm, 27 in.lbf). Use Special Service Tool 09820-00021 to uninstall the bearing cover and bearing from the rear bearing while being mindful of the fan before installation of the inside bearing cover followed by bearing insertion with Special Service Tool 09820-00030 before completing the operation with Special Service Tool 09285-76010 to install the outside bearing cover.
